Household Dangers for Ferrets
September 18, 2010
Again we would like to remind owners of ferrets from common household hazards that can be fatal to your pet. Cleaning: Fantastic, Lysol, and many other cleaning products fragrant pine can be extremely toxic to ferrets. It does not take much either! We recently had a ferret into the shelter were cramping.
The owner had cleaned the cage with Lysol and apparently had not washed carefully enough. For two ferrets in question had already died and the other held by a thread. Unfortunately, despite veterinary care, ferret others do not do it at night, either.
Another group of innocent looking killers are empty toilet paper rolls and paper towels. They can be lots of fun for ferrets who like to push them, but some ferrets get their heads stuck inside and suffocate to death. We had some friends a few weeks ago, which led one of their ferrets with them in a carrier. When I went to take the ferret to say hello, I was greeted by a crazy guy with a roll of toilet paper stuck on the head! Fortunately, it was fine after we got off the roll. Ironically our newsletter central Arizona Ferret Club for a few days later, and one of their members had the same thing happen - with tragic results.
Another problem, which has demonstrated our refuge is a ferret eats polystyrene packing peanuts. Usually small pieces pass through the intestine with the faeces, but sometimes they do - cause a crash. Also do not know how the chemical affects ferrets plastic in the stomach and intestine. I know that the ferrets eat often develop severe elastic eosinophylitis - inflammation of the intestine - and ulceration. It‘s possible that Styrofoam can do the same. Yes, ... Monitor ferrets new toys and try to anticipate the potential dangers that can arise even in the most innocent. I know we can not always outsmart our little friends, but keep trying to give your pet the best ferret care possible!
When you are not playing or supervising your pet ferret, make sure to lock him up securely in a ferret cage!
